With all of
the topics I cover here in the K-Files, its easy to feel like every day is
Halloween.
Although horror movies, candy, and fake blood are a part of my usual routine,
I do try to make an effort to up the macabre on All Hollows' E'en. But with
so many choices out there on how to spend your night, I figured I'd do you
all a favor and separate the tricks from the treats.
Besides, Halloween parties are overrated...
I'll start off with the cheapest, easiest form of Halloween entertainment:
The TV movie marathon.
As part of AMC's 'Monster Fest', they will be airing a Halloween
marathon. Starting with John Carpenter's Halloween in the morning, the
marathon ends with Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. There's no
question that this franchise is a true horror classic. Personally, I recommend Halloween 3: Season of the Witch.
The bastard of the Halloween
series, part 3 has nothing to do with Michael Myers. Instead it follows some
odd plot by a sorcerer millionaire to kill kids using Halloween masks. If you
don't mind the cheesiness, the story is both original and interesting.
On the Sci Fi channel, you can expect the usual drivel that they usually play
on any given Saturday. Though this time their lineup has a zombie theme. I
wouldn't recommend The House of the Dead or the Return of the
Living Dead sequels to my worst enemy, but Paul WS Anderson's Resident
Evil (8PM) isn't a total loss.
Nothing on that interests you? Maybe you should consider popping in one of
the new release horror DVD's out there.
A worthy sequel to the modern classic 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later--now
on DVD--is a heart-pounding tale of zombie-esque suspense. It may fall apart
at the end story wise, but it has more than a few scenes that will haunt you
all night. Original Khyron.net review Here.
Based on box office numbers, odds are that you didn't see Quentin Tarantino
and Robert Rodriguez's double feature nostalgic tribute, Grindhouse.
But fear not, each movie is now available on standalone DVD’s. If it's
the over the top violence and dark humor of 80's monster flicks that piques
your interest, Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror is for you. And
although slower paced and more dialog heavy, Quentin Tarantino's Death
Proof is no less entertaining. Staring Kurt Russell as a serial killing
ex-stuntman, its payoff is well worth the wait.
If you're considering going to the Grindhouse, I would recommend them as a
rental over a purchase, however. They're good movies, but I'd hold off
purchasing them until we get the inevitable combo package complete with the
fake trailers featured in the theatrical release.
Don't want to dress up like a shut-in today? I guess you could always go out
to a movie. Rocking the box office this week is Darren Bousman's Saw IV.
If you think you can stomach is, you won’t find a more intense
experience at the theater. After all, if it's Halloween, it must be Saw...
Now, no matter what you choose to do tonight, be sure to leave your
late-night schedule open. Nothing wraps up Halloween like Art Bell's annual
Ghost to Ghost AM radio program. He's said that the callers will be
unscreened this year, so get ready for the kind of random greatness that is
live radio. For best results, I recommend turning off all of your lights and
listening to the show on a good ol' fashioned AM radio. Nothing says
Halloween like scaring yourself to sleep.
Happy Halloween, all. The K-Files returns next week with a special surprise.
